How to prepare for trekking

Hiking, walking and trekking vacations are a lot of fun, if you enjoy moving step by step through colorful locales on the way to interesting destinations.
But it also requires some preparation from your side

1. Find the right trip for you

Decide, how much you would like to walk, and where - forests, fields, deserts, mountains, etc. It is not necessary to fly somwhere far away, you can find nice trekking routes in Europe. Check our trekking destinations in Ukraine section at our website and also Crimea trekking routes for more information. Keep in mind that if you travel with a group, you can form your personal trekking route with the help of local instructor.

2. Are you in good physical shape?

You may walk a mile or two on pavement comfortably, but can you walk four or five miles a day – or more– on varied terrain without collapsing on the couch for the rest of the afternoon? Trekking routes we offer do not require special training, but be prepared to carry the backpack with your stuff for long distances.

3. Get in shape for walking and hiking

Start your training a month or two before you leave for vacation. Spending time at the gym working with weights and on a treadmill, StairMaster or stationary bike is one route. Supplement the training with long walks or hikes on weekends, preferably on dirt trails instead of pavement. Jogging on toughens you up and increase your agility and stamina.

5. Get used to carrying gear

Get used to wearing a loaded backpack while you are walking. Wear the boots you're going to take on the trip during your training walks.

6. Bring well-fitting boots

Nothing is more important in trekking then shoes! Bring hiking boots with good ankle support. Make sure they fit properly and are broken-in enough to ensure they are comfortable, because well-fitting boots can make the difference between an entertaining or a painful trip. Take several pairs of good-quality hiking socks. (The synthetic high-tech materials that wick away moisture are much better than cotton.)

7. Have appropriate clothing

Dress adequatly - no fancy dresses, only practical things. Irrespective on the season, you should have water-proof, warm and sun-protecting clothes. "Polar" and "Goretex" are the trademarks you should put your attention to. Panama is also a must. Consult your local sports clothing store.

8. Bring the right backpack

Bring a pack that fits your body comfortably– whether it's a day pack to hold your water bottle, snacks, sunscreen lotion and jacket – or a pack designed to hold enough gear for a multi-day hike through the mountains. On most of our tracks, you'll need a 65-70 liter anathomic bakpack.

9. Personal first aid and Emergency gear

  • First aid kit with moleskin and bandages designed to cover blisters
  • Sunscreen lotion.
  • Energy snacks. So many different types are available buy a variety and sample them to learn which brand gives you the biggest boost.
  • An emergency kit in case you get lost. Include a whistle, compass, space blanket, string, duct tape, matches and iodine tablets.
  • Flashlight and extra batteries
  • Binoculars
  • Knife
  • Extra pair of prescription glasses
  • Bug Repellent
